THE DOCTRINE OF JESUS THE CHRIST

In the Old Testament there is a reference to more than one person in the Godhead. A reference to this can be seen in Genesis 1:25-27 which states: “Then God said, Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” (NASB)

The Old Testament prophecies spoke of God sending his Son to die for the payment and forgiveness of man’s sin. Consider the following Scripture:

Isaiah 53:1-12 | Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him. He was despised and forsaken of men, A man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; And like one from whom men hide their face, He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him. He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth. By oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation, who considered That He was cut off out of the land of the living, For the transgression of my people to whom the stroke was due? His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth. But the LORD was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.” As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities. Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors. (NASB)

These words were spoken more than 650 years before Jesus Christ lived out these statements about Himself. Consider the New Testament writer’s eyewitness statements concerning Christ and His life, and compare them to Isaiah 53.

Matthew 8:17: “in order that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, saying, He Himself took our infirmities, and carried away our diseases.”(KJV)

Matthew 20:27-28: “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” (KJV)

Matthew 26:63: “But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.” (KJV)

Mark 15:43: “Joseph of Arimathea came, a prominent member of the Council, who himself was waiting for the kingdom of God; and he gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus.” (KJV)

Hebrews 12:2: “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (KJV)

Titus 2:14: “who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.” (KJV)

Mark 9:12-13: “And He said to them, Elijah does first come and restore all things. And yet how is it written of the Son of Man that He should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? But I say to you, that Elijah has indeed come, and they did to him whatever they wished, just as it is written of him.” (KJV)

Jesus Christ is the second person of the Godhead. He existed before creation – as God. This means Jesus is not only God’s Son – but God who came to earth in human form as a sinless or perfect man. The following attributes or characteristics are contributed to Jesus as written in the Scriptures.

  • Jesus is God: Isaiah 40:3; Titus 2:13; 1 John 5:20,21; John 1:1,14; Acts 3:14-16; John 10:38; John 12:45; Mark 2:7-10; Matthew 16:13-17.
  • Jesus is virgin born: making Him sinless in human form: Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 1:31-37.
  • Jesus is God in human form: Philippians 2:5-11 and Hebrews 2:1-10.
  • Jesus is resurrected from the dead: John 11:25,26; 1 Corinthians 15:3-8; Revelation 1:17,18.
  • Jesus is the savior of the world: Luke 2:11; John 4:42; 1 John 4:14.

Throughout history there has always been a debate to who Jesus was. It is evident in history that Jesus did live, die and according to more than 500 witnesses, was raised from the dead. These historical facts along with the many miracles Jesus performed, and statements others and Jesus made about Himself, are on record for all to examine. The truth is for you to discover.
