Historically the claim that Jesus is God came from both the spirit world, as well as, the human world. Let’s look at the evidence. The angel Gabriel states in Luke 1:32-33: “He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and His kingdom will have no end.” A demon makes this comment in Mark 5:7: “What do I have to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?” We read in John 1:49 “Nathanael answered Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.” We find in Matthew 27:54 this observation by other eye witnesses to his death: “Now the centurion, and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the things that were happening, became very frightened and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!” At Jesus baptism God the Father made the following statement: “And after being baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon Him, and behold, a voice out of the heavens, saying, ‘This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.’” (Matthew 3:16-17)
After all this testimony, it is my view that the greatest evidence presented to the world to who the historical Jesus really was, can be found in the words of Jesus himself, as he made this statement to John the Baptist disciples: “And He answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have the gospel preached to them. ‘And blessed is he who keeps from stumbling over Me.’” (Luke 7:22-23)
Yes, the historical Jesus was not someone who did not know who he was, or what his purpose in life was all about as speculated by some. Jesus Christ knew who he was and why he came to be among us. For further reading I recommend the Gospel of John.
